How long would it take to fully charge up your mobile phone from zero to 100%? Conventional answers should range from 2-3 hours. While technology these days allows for a smartphone to be charged up to more than 50% in less than 30 minutes, it still will take more than an hour to juice it up to the max.

With the frighteningly fast pace of how technology moves in today’s world, it is only a matter of “when” rather than “if” for the possibility of a full charge completed in a matter of minutes.

And what if the “if” is NOW and the minutes are SECONDS?

Isreali start-up firm StoreDot has demonstrated just that at a recent Microsoft’S Think Next conference happening in Tel Aviv. The “magic” that makes this possible is in the use of nanotech and bio-organic nanotechnology. More specifically, the use of “nanodots” sourced from bio-organic material. Thankfully, they have a video showing a demonstration on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Despite this technological breakthrough, it is by no means ready for the commercial market. There is certainly still a long way to go before we can see these superchargers in every household. Nonetheless, it’s fascinating to see such a thing which we thought to be only the stuff of the future already possible today and it’s another giant step towards the day when mobile phones requires no charging at all.

Wishful thinking but till then, we will have to make do with our “sluggish” wall chargers and powerbanks for years to come.
